The Tatlayoko Think Tank Ltd. (TTT) delivers on-site video production training courses throughout BC. The TTT has the requisite experience and qualifications to produce professional quality videos and to train individuals in all aspects of New Media production. The TTT’s video production company is Different Spin Productions. A sampling of our work can be viewed at http://www.chilcotin.bc.ca/spin/
The TTT offers students a variety of New Media learning opportunities. Our training experience began twelve years ago when the Province of BC funded us to train five individuals to make a video. Subsequently we contracted with Simon Fraser University, North Island College, and the Greater Trail Community Skills Centre to produce a documentary. The TTT has partnered with Capilano College and the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design to provide practicum and co-op student placements. We have delivered on-site training for: Stein Valley School, Old Masset Village Council, Xeni Gwetin First Nations, St'át'imc First Nation , and the Nadleh Whut'en First Nation. In addition, we have produced promotional DVDs and delivered training for the First Nations Technology Council, FNTC.
Mentoring / Job Shadowing
An important aspect of the TTT’s training is the involvement of a shadow crew. These are trained videographers who provide training using high-end video equipment. Beyond the mentoring aspect, the idea behind the shadow crew is to provide trainees a hands-on opportunity to see and use: broadcast quality video cameras, tripods, lights and sound equipment. Trainees learn all the requisite techniques from professionals. Training provides the following training opportunities for the crew: 1. camera /sound, 2. lighting/ grip, and 3. editor
The TTT’s shadow crew consists of the following individuals:
- Our Director of Photography, Rick Smalley, has been a television cameraman for thirty-five years. Rick has worked on many documentaries, dramas, and magazine style shows for CBC.
- Our sound engineer, Buddy Thatcher, has an Audio Engineering and Production Certificate from Okanagan University College. Buddy has twenty five years’ experience in the music industry. His specialty is in original compositions.
- Lee Anne Wright, Videographer /Grip Intern, she is an example of a local youth, learning new employment skills in the multi-media field. Lee Anne has two years experience as an instructor for the TTT using Apple computers to teach video editing using iMovie and Final Cut Pro.
John Kerr is the director of the Tatlayoko Think Tank Ltd. He has been involved in all aspects of video production from camera to sound to lights to editing for ten years. The TTT has considerable experience in programs that deal with community capacity building. The TTT has demonstrated its ability to leverage funding and to administer and coordinate large multiple projects. The TTT has a history of identifying and working with partners in both the private and public sector. The TTT has administered a number of video production projects involving youth, training and local residents, including:
- A DVD, FNTC GIS Mapping On-site Training Workshop, filming assisted by a member of the Bonaparte Band in Cache Creek.
